Sumi’s journey demonstrates the power of community and compassion in transforming the lives of mistreated animals. Her story is a testament to the dedication of passionate animal lovers like you who have pledged to Raise the Roof.
When police officers arrived at a property to make an arrest, they were met with a distressing sight—a multitude of cats, so many that the owner had lost count. Among them, one stood out: a tiny figure with a right eye obscured by a horrific infection. Acting swiftly, the officers seized the cat and rushed her to an emergency vet practice. Despite the late hour, they then drove her across the M62 to deliver her to the RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital, where dedicated staff awaited her arrival.
The extent of Sumi’s suffering was immediately apparent. The infection had ravaged her eye to the point of rupture, with maggots dropping out of the wound —a scene of unimaginable horror. That fateful night, RSPCA veterinary staff performed emergency surgery to save Sumi’s life, stemming the spread of infection and offering her a chance at healing.
In the days that followed, Sumi discharged into our care at the RSPCA Manchester and Salford Branch. Affectionately named after the Japanese word for elegance, Sumi proved to be a gentle and affectionate soul, despite her horrible ordeal.
It was discovered that Sumi’s suffering stemmed from untreated cat flu—a stark reminder of the importance of timely veterinary care. Though her recovery took time, her resilience shone brightly, and soon she found herself welcomed into a loving forever home. The joyous photos of Sumi thriving in her new environment, were gratefully received by the rescuing police officer who declared: “This has made my year!”
